About Me

I grew up in a very musical family. Mom and dad met in college, sitting next to each other in the orchestra. Dad was a high school band director, mom taught piano lessons from our home. Me becoming a teacher? I think it was inevitable!  I remember being at the piano all the time – practicing what I was supposed to, then trying out all the books that mom had for her students. That love of music and learning has stuck with me and shaped much of what I do.

For years, I thought of myself as a player, but not a teacher. I’d loved my experience taking lessons from some terrific teachers, but didn’t see myself picking up that mantle. After being asked multiple times, “Do you teach? I’d love to have my kids take lessons from you!”, I decided to dive in, and much to my surprise…I loved it! (Now, I don’t think I was very good at it at first and if you were one of my earliest students you’d probably agree!) I discovered that I got as much joy out of hearing my students play a piece, master a tricky concept or sing and play a song they loved as when I did the same thing! Now, 30+ years in, I’m still loving it!

My Mission

My goal is to inspire a lifelong love of music through piano lessons that I can tailor to your individual needs. I can’t ever remember not having fun at the piano. My mother and previous teachers may disagree, but I’m the one writing this narrative so we’ll go with how I remember it. I think learning the piano should be fun. Is it hard work? Sure, but the payoff is AMAZING! With a strong emphasis on mentorship, especially for worship leaders and aspiring musicians, my goal is to cultivate both skill and confidence. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your abilities, John’s Piano Studio offers a supportive community where you can thrive musically.

My Teaching Philosophy

For beginner students, I use the Simply Music curriculum, which emphasizes making music enjoyable and accessible. Our lessons cover a variety of genres, including classical, contemporary, and worship music, allowing students to explore their musical interests fully.

Experience & Passion

With years of teaching experience, I’ve had the privilege of instructing students in  growing their keyboard skills, understanding music theory, and developing and strengthening technique. My passion lies in mentoring aspiring musicians and worship leaders, helping them to develop both their musical skills and their personal artistry. I love those ‘lightbulb moments’ where a student connects with what they’re playing – after that…everything’s easy!
